Our City ADVENTURE

Oprah Winfrey once said...."My first day in Chicago, September 4, 1983, I set foot in this city and just walking down the street, it was like roots, like the motherland.  I knew I belonged here."  I can honestly say, I GET what she means.  For me, I fell in LOVE with the city the moment my father took me downtown as a little girl.  And I have not let go of my love for the city of Chicago since....the rest is history....and will forever be.
While Dawn and Sydney were visiting from California, we headed to the city - all of us girls for an adventure!  First stop, Millennium Park!  We visited The Bean - also known as the Cloud Gate.  Who could be disappointed seeing your reflection all while seeing the beautiful City of Chicago?  The girls loved it!  Trekking down Michigan Avenue some where in between, we stopped at the Candy store, where each of us picked out a special treat! YUM! Then, we stopped for a snack at TGIF!  Then off to the Observation Deck!  What did we do there?  WELL....the kids conned us into 360 Chicago! TILT! They wanted to be on the observation deck that is the home of the thrilling and exhilarating TILT ride - an enclosed moving platform that literally tilts you out and over the edge of the John Hancock Center.  Who was the most fearful?  AUNT DAWN!!  After wards, we met Bob out for a sushi dinner!  All in all, we all had a great day together and even made a stop at one of our favorite store's....LUSH!  We all picked out a bath bomb to enjoy!  And they are the BEST!  The girls tell me often that this was one of their favorite memories of the summer.....CHICAGO!!!!

8.23.17 - First Day of School!

First day of school for Isabella, my little 3rd grader and Giselle, 1st grade!  What a great first day!  Daddy was home this morning to send the girls off to school, what a super special treat!  This year, Isabella has Ms. Day for third grade and Giselle has Ms. Pierson for first grade.  Last night, we packed up the girls lunches, set out their outfits and backpacks by the door.  Can you guess which little girl was MOST EXCITED to start school??!!!  If you guessed Giselle, you guessed right!  She was up this morning at 6 a.m., dressed within fifteen minutes and ready to walk out the door!  I had to tell her that she still had two more hours to wait!  When that little girl is excited about something, she gets up and is ready to ROCK!
After school, we went to the "ice cream factory" as a special treat for vanilla ice cream cones with sprinkles on it!  And now, we wind the evening down with turkey meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy and sweet corn, followed by signing paperwork for the school, then relaxing.
Starting school always means evenings spent doing endless hours of homework (times 2), heading to sports, girl scouts or even chess.  It's complete CHAOS.  It means a strict schedule accompanied by lots of running around.  I wouldn't change a thing because as each school year comes and goes, we all EVOLVE.  We all develop gradually.  Individually and as a family.  I look forward to what this year brings Isabella and Giselle!  SHOOT FOR THE STARS LADIES and thank you for the precious privilege of participating in your lives, today and EVERYDAY!  LOVE YOU to the MOON and BACK......

A Getaway Before School Starts

We had not planned on taking a vacation anytime soon this year and then an opportunity came our way.  Bob's boss asked him if he would like to take advantage of his 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom residence at the Ritz Carlton located in St. Thomas for a week.  We had never been to St. Thomas before and why would we pass up a deal of a lifetime to stay at such a beautiful place?
The last week before school started for the girls, we headed off to St. Thomas.  The weather was absolutely beautiful.  The Ritz-Carlton was top of the line and we really enjoyed having 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a kitchen area, a living room area, 3 outside sitting areas and tons of amenities!
We spent our time relaxing, sleeping in, eating yummy island food, lounging on the beach, hanging out by the pool, day excursions, and tons of kayaking.
Before we left, Giselle told me that she was going to leave Teddy at home......I secretly packed him in my backpack because I knew she would think better of it later and be sad.  Glad I did because sure enough she was sad when we were at the airport and I pulled him out and she was super happy.  After all, Teddy is a world class traveler - he goes EVERYWHERE.  He has been to Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, St. Martin, Anguilla, Aruba, Mexico and so many other places.
While we were in St. Thomas, we rented the car and drove around the island to see all that it had to offer. We visited several Mountain Tops, Magens Bay and even downtown Charlotte Amalie.  Another day, we took our car on a barge and floated over to St. John.  I think it's pretty neat that you can pay $50 round trip to take your car on a barge and head to another island for as long as you want!  When we visited St. John, we "beach hopped" seeing Honeymoon Beach, Trunk Beach and the oh so famous Cinnamon Bay Beach.  Later that day, we stopped at a Fisherman's restaurant where Bob and I shared appetizers.
I love the girls sense of adventure!  Whenever we go anywhere, they love to experience new things and are always up to have fun, no questions asked.  Bob and I watched them for hours on end swimming, snorkeling and just being little girls.  They received their very first private snorkeling lesson, in which they loved.  Could scuba diving be next?  It's never too early to start!
Later in the trip, we took a day adventure on a boat cruise to the BVI (British Virgin Island), Virgin Gorda - The Baths.  We got another stamp in our passport on the water!  At The Baths, we saw granite that eroded into piles of boulders on the beach.  The boulders form natural tidal pools, tunnels, arches, and scenic grottoes that are open to the sea.  We had a long hike to get to the natural baths and once we got there we enjoyed swimming and snorkeling.  Later that afternoon, we had lunch at the top of the mountain and then stopped at another island on the way home to snorkel.  The girls got to see dolphins and tons of other tropical fish while snorkeling.  Bob and I both think that they girls have a pair of "fish gills" considering how much they love the water.
I was excited to learn something new.  In 1917, the United States purchased the U.S. Virgin Islands for $25 million from the Danish government in order to establish a naval base.  They are an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States, so you do not need a passport to visit St. Thomas, St. Croix or St. John.  Interesting, right?!!  I love fun facts like that!
All in all, we really enjoyed spending the week together as a family before school started.  It was a nice way to wrap up the summer that went by too fast.  Here are some of my favorite photos of our family vacation........

Pierogi Fest 2017

Did you know that there is an annual Pierogi Fest in Whiting, Indiana?  I sure didn't, that is not until I read it in the Sunday newspaper.  It has been an annual festival for 23 years that draws around 300,000 people a year from around the country and is one of the largest food festivals of the Midwest.  Who knew! Being a lover of pierogies, I was on a mission to go and eat one of every kind!
Dawn and Sydney were in town, so we packed up the truck late Saturday afternoon and headed there.  Lynn, Tom and Ella joined in on the fun too.  Once we landed, we tried loaded baked potato, sweet cheese, pizza, sauerkraut, meat and mushroom, potato and chicken pot pie.
I have to say, all of them were delicious and we may just have to add this to the calendar as an annual trip!

Sydney, Isabella, Giselle and Ella enjoyed playing various games in which they all won some pretty cool prizes.

All in all, everyone walked away with happy bellies and SMILES.  A fun time was had by all.  My mouth will be watering for Pierogis until next years festival, that is for certain!!
